Kim Moon-soo, presidential candidate for the ruling People Power Party (PPP), on Wednesday accused the Democratic Party of abusing its legislative powers to undermine the judiciary, calling it “something that doesn’t even happen in communist countries.”

Speaking at a rally held in front of the Supreme Court in Seocho-dong to defend the judiciary and condemn the Democratic Party, Kim said, “How can criminals threaten, blackmail, investigate, and even impeach judges? This is unheard of even in communist regimes.”

He urged the public to hold the Democratic Party accountable, saying, “They are trying to overturn the judiciary through legislation. The people must judge them.”

Kim accused the Democratic Party of trying to rewrite the Constitution’s principle of equality before the law. “Article 11 of our Constitution says all citizens are equal before the law. But the Democratic Party wants to change it to ‘everyone except Lee Jae-myung.’ This is not an issue of left or right — it’s about whether we defend or destroy constitutional governance.”

Referring to the Democratic Party’s push to impeach the Chief Justice following a ruling that sent opposition leader Lee Jae-myung’s election law violation case back to a lower court, Kim said, “Have you ever heard of a country where someone gets a retrial and then tries to impeach and investigate the Chief Justice because of it? I haven’t. It’s absurd.”

He also criticized the party’s move to impeach prosecutors and revise election laws, saying, “The idea that a criminal could impeach a prosecutor who investigated them is something out of a cartoon — it’s unthinkable.”

Kim added, “I came here today to protect the Supreme Court and the rule of law. The most important principle in a democracy is checks and balances between powers. This June 3 election isn’t just a vote — it’s a sacred patriotic act to stop dictatorship. The people must choose: save the country or allow it to fall into tyranny.”

PPP floor leader Kwon Seong-dong echoed Kim’s remarks, saying, “Lee Jae-myung is a criminal. The Supreme Court’s remand of his election law case is a de facto guilty ruling.”

Kwon continued, “This isn’t just about personal revenge. Denying the judiciary as a whole and retaliating against the prosecutors and judges who found him guilty — that’s what gangsters do.”

He concluded by saying, “Lee Jae-myung’s faction is now moving beyond the legislature to paralyze the executive branch and take control of the judiciary. We strongly condemn the Democratic Party’s authoritarian push to seize the courts.”
