Prosecutors indicted former President Moon Jae-in without detention on April 24 on charges of bribery related to his daughter’s family’s relocation to Thailand.

The Jeonju District Prosecutors’ Office announced the outcome of its investigation into what it described as the “bribery case concerning improper support for Moon’s daughter’s family’s relocation to Thailand.” Moon was charged with violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (Bribery), while former Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Sang-jik was also indicted on charges of bribery and breach of duty.

Moon’s daughter, Da-hye, and her former husband, surnamed Seo, were not indicted, receiving a suspension of indictment instead.

The former president is accused of receiving approximately 217 million won (around $157,000) in the form of salary and housing support for Seo, who was hired by Thai Eastar Jet. Prosecutors concluded that Lee Sang-jik, known to be the actual owner of the airline, employed Seo in exchange for securing the top position at the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency.

Moon had been financially supporting his daughter, who had no stable income at the time, but reportedly stopped after Seo’s employment began.
