Former President Yoon Suk-yeol remained silent on April 10, seven days after the Constitutional Court’s unanimous ruling that removed him from office. His official residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan District, remained quiet throughout the day, as speculation mounted over whether Yoon would issue a public statement upon his departure.
Political observers are closely watching Hannam-dong, anticipating that even a single gesture or remark from Yoon could shake up the presidential race once again.
According to political insiders, preparations are underway for Yoon to vacate the residence this week, with plans for him and his wife to leave the Hannam compound at 5 p.m. on April 11. This would be Yoon’s first public appearance since the court ruling.
Reports from aides and security officials suggest that he will move to his pre-presidency apartment in Seocho-dong, Seoul. However, the stay there is expected to be temporary. The apartment, located in a high-rise mixed-use complex, poses challenges for security and is less suitable for the couple’s multiple pets. As a result, Yoon is reportedly considering relocating to a stand-alone house in the Seoul metropolitan area.
There had already been speculation during his presidency that he was searching for a detached residence outside central Seoul for post-retirement life. The move would follow a precedent set by former presidents Lee Myung-bak, Park Geun-hye, and Moon Jae-in, all of whom chose single-family homes—two of them in provincial areas.
Yoon’s former aides at the presidential office in Yongsan are also preparing to depart. While most staff typically plan ahead before the end of a presidency, many were caught off guard by the abrupt nature of Yoon’s dismissal.
Most of the aides are expected to remain in place temporarily to assist Acting President Han Duck-soo until a new government is formed. Those affiliated with the ruling party are preparing to return to political roles in Yeouido.
Some aides have reportedly submitted their resignations and are expected to accompany Yoon in his future political endeavors.
A source in the ruling party commented, “Yongsan staff are not yet in a position to publicly discuss their next moves. But the shock from the 8-0 court decision is beginning to subside, and there’s a growing sentiment among some to follow the former president on his next political journey.”
