Following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, the ruling People Power Party (PPP) is accelerating preparations for an early presidential election. Kim Moon-soo, the current Minister of Employment and Labor, is gaining prominence as a leading conservative candidate, with increasing calls for him to officially declare his candidacy.

On April 6, supporters and political analysts highlighted Kim's consistent opposition to Yoon's impeachment as a factor bolstering his standing within the conservative base. Recent Gallup polls indicate that Kim holds 24% support among PPP members and 23% among those opposing the impeachment, positioning him ahead of other conservative contenders.

Kim's background as a former labor activist and his administrative experience are viewed as assets. Born in 1951 in Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, he was actively involved in student and labor movements during his university years. Over time, he transitioned to a pro-democracy stance, advocating for liberal values. His supporters emphasize his clean record and his commitment to democratic principles, especially during periods of political turmoil.

Speculation suggests that Kim may resign from his ministerial position as early as April 8, following a cabinet meeting, to rejoin the PPP and announce his presidential bid. During a recent rally organized by civic groups near his residence in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, Kim remarked, "I have no personal ambitions, but I cannot stand by as the country heads in the wrong direction." When asked about his plans to join the PPP, he responded, "I will consider it carefully."

Observers note that both major parties are likely to finalize their presidential candidates by late April or early May. Drawing from the precedent set during the 2017 snap election following Park Geun-hye's impeachment, June 3 is considered a probable date for the upcoming election.
