After the National Assembly failed to pass the motion to impeach South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Saturday, Prime Minister Han Duk-soo vowed Sunday morning to stabilize the political situation, saying, “The government will do its best to stabilize the current situation as soon as possible, looking only at the people based on the will of the people.” He made the remarks during a joint pubic address with the ruling People Power Party Representative Han Dong-hoon.

The prime minister expressed that he feels a heavy responsibility regarding the current situation. “The most important thing is that there should be no vacancy in state affairs,” he said. “I will do my best to serve the people every moment so that the safety of the country and the daily life of the people are maintained safely.”

“Many people are suffering due to sluggish domestic demand,” he said. “There are also growing concerns about economic downturn. The ministers and public officials of the ministries will prioritize the will of the people and work together with the ruling party to operate all state functions stably and smoothly.”

PPP leader Han Dong-hoon stressed the orderly early resignation of President Yoon Suk-yeol. He mentioned that the party leader cannot exercise authority over state affairs and that the prime minister will take charge of state affairs.

In response, main opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung held a press conference at the National Assembly and blasted the decision as an act of “destroying the constitutional order,” calling the idea of the ruling party and the prime minister managing the country together “bizarre,” considering the president is still in office.
