China and Russia have reaffirmed their anti-U.S. alliance, analysts say. Attention is drawn to the response they will take when U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January next year.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, and Sergei Shoigu, secretary of the Russian Federation Security Council, co-chaired the 19th round of the annual strategic security consultation on Tuesday, the first high-level meeting of Chinese and Russian officials since Trump’s re-election as US president. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on major issues of common concern related to strategic security.

“The international situation is complicated. However, the more external challenges the two countries face, the more firmly they must unite and cooperate to protect their common interests,” Wang said. “We hope that we will focus on changes in the international situation and communicate closely with Russia. We hope to coordinate pending issues together.” Wang’s remarks seemed moderate, but suggested that he actively advocated anti-U.S. solidarity.

Shoigu’s response was straightforward. “The most urgent task of the two countries is countering the policy of dual containment of Russia and China pursued by the United States and its satellites,” Shoigu was quoted as saying by Russian state news agencies. He made it clear that the two countries are completely blood allies that have no choice but to go for the anti-U.S. alliance together, saying, “The bilateral relationship goes beyond the one in the form of military and political alliances during the Cold War.”

The words that came from the meeting between Chen Wenqing, secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, and Shoigu are also not simple. Considering the fact that they emphasized the need to strive for world peace, we can clearly read their positions to jointly respond by defining the U.S. as the “axis of evil.” Wu, an international political commentator in Beijing, said, “The two countries see the U.S. as the destroyer of the world order. These seems to be a reason why the cooperation between the two countries is becoming an essential strategy, not an option.”

Although not disclosed yet, the two countries are said to have discussed issues related to the Korean Peninsula and the war in Ukraine as well as anti-U.S. alliance. Diplomatic sources in Beijing say that China fully supported Russia’s position on the war in Ukraine. It would be fair to say that the firm anti-U.S. alliance between the two countries is now becoming a perfect new normal.
