President Yoon Suk-yeol is set to depart Thursday for an eight-day, five-night trip to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Peru and Group of 20 summits in Brazil.

President Yoon is expected to attend a trilateral summit with U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, as well as a separate meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. If a summit between Yoon and Xi takes place, it will be the first time in two years since November 2022. Yoon is also arranging a bilateral summit with Ishiba.

Principal deputy national security adviser Kim Tae-hyo said during a briefing at the presidential office on Tuesday that Yoon will visit Peru from Thursday to Saturday and then travel to Brazil from Sunday to Tuesday. First lady Kim Keon-hee will not accompany Yoon.

The presidential office said that it is in talks to arrange Seoul-Tokyo, Seoul-Beijing, and Seoul-Washington-Tokyo summits on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

When asked if there is a possibility of meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit, the official said the top office is in close communication with the president-elect’s team.

In addition, Yoon is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Vietnam, Mexico, and Brunei.

As South Korea will chair next year’s APEC summit, Yoon will lead discussions to create a free, stable trade and investment environment.

Yoon will also introduce the South Korean government’s measures to support the vulnerable, using digital technology and emphasize APEC-level solidarity to develop common interests using eco-friendly and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

On the sidelines, Yoon is set hold a summit with Peruvian President Dinal Boluarte and attend a ceremony to sign the nameplate of a vessel being built by a South Korean company at a shipyard in Peru. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, focusing on investments in defense, infrastructure and trade. The two countries are expected to sign a number of MOUs for cooperation, focusing on key minerals, tourism and ICT.
