President Yoon Suk-yeol has pledged on Thursday to position South Korea among the world’s top three artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouses by 2027.
The vision was announced during the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on AI (PCAI) held earlier in the day at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. The goal is to become one of the globally leading AI powerhouses by consolidating and developing AI capabilities. “We are now witnessing a significant civilizational shift, with AI fundamentally transforming human life. The future and destiny of a country will be determined by whether it leads this change or follows from behind,” Yoon said during the inauguration ceremony.
The president plans to lead the PCAI personally by chairing the committee, which will include 30 civilian AI experts and 10 government officials at the ministerial level. Taejae University President Yeom Jae-ho has been appointed as the vice chair of the new presidential committee. Yoon vowed to establish a national AI computing center with joint investment from both the government and the private sectors, and to promote an AI transformation across industries and throughout society to expand private investment in the AI sector.
“The private sector has agreed to invest a total of 65 trillion won in the AI sector by 2027,” Park Sang-ook, senior presidential secretary for science and technology, said.
