President Yoon Suk-yeol on Thursday newly established the post of a chief of staff for policy and replaced all five senior secretaries.
The president appointed Lee Kwan-sup, current senior secretary for policy and planning, to the new position. Yoon named head of the policy monitoring office Han Oh-seop his new senior secretary for political affairs and presidential spokesperson Lee Do-woon as his senior press secretary. Former KBS anchor Hwang Sang-moo was appointed as senior secretary for civil society while Park Chan-sup, a monetary policymaker of the Bank of Korea, was named as senior secretary for economic affairs. Vice education minister Jang Sang-yoon was appointed as senior secretary for social policy.
Presidential chief of staff Kim Dae-ki announced the results of the president’s late reshuffle during a press briefing at the presidential office in Seoul.
The presidential office will now run under a three-pillar system led by the presidential chief of staff, the chief of staff for policy and the national security office. Policy chief of staff Lee will supervise the teams led by the three senior presidential secretaries in charge of economic affairs, social affairs, and science and technology-related affairs.
“Lee has smoothly resolved major issues until now by demonstrating his outstanding policy planning and coordination skills,” Kim said. “He has deep insight into overall state affairs and is the right person to lead state affairs with momentum based on communication with diverse stakeholders.”
Lee served as a industrial economic policy officer, energy business policy officer, energy resource chief, and industrial policy chief at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy after passing the 27th Public Administration Examination. In 2014, he was promoted to the first vice minister of industry under the Park Geun-hye administration.
All of the new appointees are set to assume office next Monday.
