Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) claimed the pole position in the latest survey for PPP supporters that asked who the most suitable new PPP leader is. Ahn won 39.8 percent, beating Rep. Kim Gi-hyeon of 36.5 percent by a 3.3 percentage point difference within the margin of error of plus or minus 4.7 percentage points. Support for Kim increased by 13 percentage points compared to the previous survey, while support for Ahn jumped to 20 percentage points. This indicates that Ahn is benefiting from former PPP lawmaker Na Kyung-won’s recent announcement to drop out of the PPP leadership race.
According to the poll conducted on 1,030 adults by R&Search on Friday-Saturday, Ahn came in as the most favored candidate for the upcoming election to pick the new PPP chairman. In the previously conducted poll, Ahn was placed second with 19.8 percent behind Kim with 23.5 percent.
Former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, who was closely following the two leading runners with 12.2 percent, received only 7.2 percent of support in the survey. PPP lawmakers Cho Kyung-tae and Yoon Sang-hyun earned 3.4 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively.
The approval ratings for the ruling People Power Party (PPP) and the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) remained similar to each other with 42.7 percent and 41.4 percent, respectively. The support for the two rival parties fell 2 percentage points from the previous survey, maintaining a 1.3 percentage point gap. The minor opposition Justice Party fell 0.2 percentage points to 1.3 percent.
The poll, commissioned by AsiaToday, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level. More details can be sound on the websites of the National Election Poll Review Committee and R&Search.
