The main opposition People Power Party’s (PPP) presidential candidate Yoon Seok-youl continues to enjoy a lead against the ruling Democratic Party’s (DP) candidate Lee Jae-myung in a survey. The latest poll showed that Yoon is leading his opponent Lee by more than 16 percentage points. Experts say Yoon’s support rose on the back of the PPP national convention last Friday where he was named the presidential nominee.

AsiaToday conducted an opinion survey in celebration of the 16th anniversary of its founding. The result showed that 48.6 percent of the respondents said they would vote for Yoon in the next presidential election while 32.4 percent chose Lee. The gap between the two candidates is 16.2 percentage points. Ahn Cheol-soo of the minor opposition People’s Party and Sim Sang-jeung of the progressive Justice Party received 3.8 percent and 2.7 percent of support, respectively, while former Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon had 1 percent.

The poll commissioned by the polling firm, R&Search on November 7-8, asked 1,012 adults nationwide. It was a telephone and cell phone survey using an automatic response system (ARS). It had a confidence level of 95 percent with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, with the response rate at 6.8 percent.

When asked about the need for a special prosecution for the Daejang-dong land development scandal, 72.3 percent said it was necessary. The reason why many are in favor of special prosecution is the case involves growing public anger and concern over inequality and polarization of real estate.

Besides, 38.8 percent thought that the Daejang-dong case was directly related to DP candidate Lee. In particular, 58.9 percent of the PPP supporters believed that Lee was directly involved in the case. 19 percent said the Daejang-dong case was a corruption case involving construction and legal professionals.

When asked whether the two former presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye needed pardons, 39.7 percent opposed the idea while 29 percent were in favor. In addition, 20.7 percent said that only Park Geun-hye should be pardoned while 5.7 percent said that only Lee should be pardoned.

As for the Moon Jae-in administration, six out of 10 people gave a negative assessment. 33.9 percent assessed the administration positively while 61.8 percent assessed negatively.
