Belgian physicist Francis Halzen / Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Belgian physicist Francis Halzen (82), who made seminal contributions to neutrino observational research, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics.


The Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on the 6th (local time) that Halzen was selected as the sole laureate of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics.


The Nobel Committee stated that it recognized Halzen for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.


The prize purse for this year's Nobel Prize in Physics stands at 12 million Swedish kronor (approx. 1.61 billion won), which Halzen will receive in full.


Following the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on the 5th, this year's Nobel Prize in Physics was unveiled today. The laureates for Chemistry on the 7th, Literature on the 8th, Peace on the 9th, and Economic Sciences on the 12th are scheduled to be announced in succession.
