The film 'The Assassin(s)' is enjoying strong box office success, surpassing 2.4 million admissions despite controversies over historical distortion.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for movie tickets on the 6th, 'The Assassin(s)' drew 178,854 moviegoers the previous day. Its cumulative audience reached 2,412,817, ranking first in daily box office attendance as of the previous day.
As the historical distortion controversy persists, it is adversely affecting promotional events associated with the film.
Production company Hive Media Corp announced via Instagram on the 5th that it would prematurely end an event tied to the "Clue Tracking Screening" organized for moviegoers.
The production company stated, "As interpretations deviating from the content and purpose of the event spread, an event prepared for our audience became embroiled in controversies unrelated to its original intent," adding, "After carefully reviewing this situation, we inevitably decided to conclude the social media-linked event early."
Controversy has also flared over online slander and the dissemination of false information targeting lead actor Yoo Hae-jin.
Yoo's agency, VAST Entertainment, stated in an official release, "We have confirmed that slander and false rumors regarding our actor Yoo Hae-jin are being indiscriminately circulated and amplified across online communities and social media."
The agency continued, "We view all acts of creating and spreading false information, malicious personal attacks, insults, invasions of the actor's privacy, personal threats, and defamation with the utmost seriousness," explaining that it is continuously collecting related postings and evidence.
The agency affirmed, "We will take all possible measures to protect the rights, interests, and safety of our actor," adding that it will take necessary action against verified matters.
'The Assassin(s)' traces the hidden forces behind the 1974 assassination of First Lady Yuk Young-soo. In exploring various possibilities surrounding the incident, the film addresses a hypothesis suggesting that then-President Park Chung-hee was behind it, prompting criticism from political circles and moviegoers that it distorts historical facts.
