U.S. President Donald Trump and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who have shown contrasting stances on artificial intelligence (AI) safety regulations, held their first one-on-one meeting on the 27th local time.

According to Bloomberg, Reuters, and other outlets, the two had a private dinner on the evening of the 27th. Speaking to reporters near Chicago, President Trump disclosed the dinner schedule and said he would discuss the pace of AI development that CEO Amodei has raised.

The dinner came together after President Trump separately invited CEO Amodei, who was unable to attend a state dinner on the 24th with Chinese President Xi Jinping due to scheduling conflicts.

Major executives across the U.S. AI industry attended that state dinner in large numbers, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who runs xAI, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, U.S. online outlet Axios reported.

The administration and Anthropic have maintained a tense relationship. The U.S. Department of Defense designated Anthropic a supply chain risk in February, and the U.S. Department of Commerce imposed export controls on Anthropic's AI models Mythos 5 and Fable 5 in June.

President Trump has maintained that introducing new regulations would open the door for China to overtake the U.S. in the AI sector.

While acknowledging CEO Amodei's concerns that developing AI too rapidly could increase risks, he holds the position that preserving a technological edge over China is more critical.

Attending the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois on the 27th, President Trump told Fox News, "Our AI technology is about a year and a half ahead of China," adding, "We are leading, and we are building tremendous spaces worth trillions of dollars, so why should we give that up?"

He also added, "I am not worried," noting that he remains confident in the technology and its potential.

CEO Amodei has shown a contrasting stance to President Trump, arguing that the pace of AI model development must be slowed, viewing that AI poses risks of slipping beyond human control.

As key industry figures lend weight to CEO Amodei's arguments, voices demanding AI-related regulations are spreading.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates stated in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press aired the same day that he wants to meet President Trump to discuss AI issues.

He urged new AI regulations, saying, "I hope that, given my life's work in the field, my saying how unique and different this is and how concerned I am will add to what he is hearing from other people."

He also stressed, "You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like," emphasizing that "it has to be a required thing."

President Trump previously described the series of concerns surrounding AI risks as a "hoax."

In the NBC interview, co-founder Gates pushed back, stating, "It is not a hoax at all," arguing that safeguards would not hinder industrial progress and that the risks of not introducing them are real.
