HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has secured an order for four 10,100-TEU container ships worth a total of 678.9 billion won from an Oceanian shipowner. By clinching eight vessels of the same hull design this year alone, the shipbuilder is strengthening its competitive edge in the mid-to-large container ship market.
On the 23rd, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction announced that it signed a construction contract with an Oceanian shipping line for four 10,100-TEU container ships.
After winning an order in February for its first 10,000-TEU-class container ship to be built at the Yeongdo Shipyard, the company added two more in April. With this latest order for four vessels, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has secured a total building volume of eight ships of the same type and design this year.
In particular, this contract represents an additional order placed by the same shipowner that recently ordered container ships from HJ Shipbuilding & Construction. The company explained that the shipowner's satisfaction with the quality and construction capabilities demonstrated in the previous vessels led to the repeat order.
The 10,000-TEU container ship is an in-house model developed as the largest vessel size that can be built in the dock at HJ Shipbuilding & Construction's Yeongdo Shipyard. It features high-efficiency propulsion and hull form design technologies that cut fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The design also expands capacity for reefer containers used to transport chilled and frozen freight, catering to demand for high-value cargo transport.
Eco-friendly specifications were also incorporated to comply with tightening International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations. Equipped with sulfur oxide (SOx) scrubbers and designed with a "methanol-ready" configuration, the vessels offer shipowners greater flexibility in transitioning to eco-friendly fuels and secure long-term operational competitiveness.
Yoo Sang-chul, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, said, "Building on the experience and technological prowess we have accumulated in the mid-to-large container ship market, we have established a foundation to consecutively construct 10,000-TEU-class container ships at our Yeongdo Shipyard. We will continue to pursue a selective order-taking strategy centered on profitability while consistently reinforcing our competitiveness in high-efficiency, eco-friendly, and high-value-added container ships."
