U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his call for U.S. interest rates to be brought down below 1% per year, coming right after the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate.
On the 16th (local time), President Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, "Interest Rates in the United States should be 1%, or less, because we are the Best Credit in the World — BY FAR".
He went on to emphasize, "LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND FAST!"
President Trump urged rate cuts while asserting that new investments are actively pouring into the U.S. economy.
He also addressed the trade deficit. He claimed the U.S. could make at least $1.5 trillion a year if it stopped trading with every country with which it runs a trade deficit. He added that "'deficit' is just a fancy word for loss," arguing that the U.S. is holding up almost the entire world.
Trump's remarks came immediately after the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate.
At the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on the 16th (local time), the Fed decided to raise the benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage points to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%. The rate hike marks the first in roughly three years, since July 2023. The Fed explained that inflation remains elevated and that the move was intended to return inflation to its 2% target. The central bank also hinted at the possibility of further rate increases within the year.
Prior to this decision, President Trump had consistently demanded interest rate cuts.
