Habitat for Humanity Korea is launching emergency shelter support with Habitat for Humanity Nepal to assist disaster victims who lost their homes in catastrophic floods.

Habitat for Humanity Korea announced on the 31st that it will pursue an emergency shelter support project with Habitat for Humanity Nepal targeting areas affected by the catastrophic floods.

This disaster occurred on the 26th in the high Himalayan mountain ranges bordering Nepal and Tibet, China. As glaciers and rock masses collapsed, massive volumes of water and soil poured downstream, damaging infrastructure including villages, roads, and bridges. With communication and power supplies severed in certain areas, search and rescue operations also continue to face difficulties.

According to Habitat for Humanity Korea, as of the morning of the 31st (Korea Standard Time), approximately 800 people have died and the whereabouts of around 2,000 remain unconfirmed. Concerns are also being raised that the scale of damage could increase further as search operations proceed.

The primary objective of this support is to provide temporary shelter to victims who have lost their homes. In the first phase, Habitat for Humanity Korea plans to provide 100 million won to deliver emergency shelter kits for use in disaster zones to victims and set up temporary evacuation spaces.

Habitat for Humanity Nepal will pursue a three-stage response plan based on the disaster situation.

In the first stage, it will distribute 1,000 emergency shelter kits to 1,000 affected households. Subsequently, in the second stage, it plans to provide temporary shelter facilities and conditional cash support for housing repairs. In the third stage, housing reconstruction will be pursued, taking into account the scale of damage and financial resources.

The plan is to provide step-by-step support extending beyond emergency shelter kit distribution to establishing temporary housing facilities, repairing homes, and carrying out reconstruction.

Habitat for Humanity Korea previously conducted temporary shelter support and reconstruction projects during past Nepal earthquake disasters. During the 2016 Ecuador earthquake, it provided 2,000 emergency shelter kits and 300 shelter recovery kits to approximately 10,000 disaster victims.

An official from Habitat for Humanity Korea said, "What the victims who lost their homes overnight need most is temporary shelter that can ensure minimum safety," adding, "We ask for your interest and support for the Nepali victims suffering from this unprecedented disaster."

Habitat for Humanity Korea is the Korean branch of the international non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity, established in 1994. It carries out housing environment improvement, home construction, and reconstruction projects for neighbors living in substandard housing environments.
