Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has lifted yet another trophy, further solidifying its position as Europe's premier club. Having claimed back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles over the past two seasons, PSG secured its second consecutive UEFA Super Cup victory by defeating Aston Villa 2-1 on August 12 (local time) in Salzburg, Austria.

Until just a few years ago, PSG carried a strong reputation as a club that spent heavily to assemble star-studded squads, only to fall short near the finish line in European competitions. That narrative has completely shifted. Following its inaugural Champions League title in 2025, PSG achieved back-to-back triumphs by defeating Arsenal in 2026 and has now repeated as Super Cup champions. UEFA recognized PSG as only the second team in the modern Champions League era to successfully defend its crown.

At the center of this transformation lies manager Luis Enrique's tactical philosophy. Rather than relying on individual superstars, the team dismantles opponents through intense pressing, rapid transitions, and fluid positional rotation. With Vitinha and João Neves anchoring the midfield, alongside Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes surging forward to overload the flanks, the system has reshaped a former "assembly of stars" into a cohesive powerhouse. In its analysis of PSG's Champions League victory last season, UEFA highlighted this tactical maturity as a primary driver of success.

The Super Cup once again validated this tactical potency. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring, while Désiré Doué led the victory with a goal and an assist. The attacking frontline—featuring Ousmane Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia, and Doué—remains formidable. Even following Lee Kang-in's departure for Atlético Madrid, the match showcased the depth of PSG's squad.

PSG now sets its sights on a historic benchmark last achieved by Real Madrid eight years ago: a Champions League three-peat. Should PSG claim the Champions League trophy again this season, it will join Real Madrid as the only clubs to accomplish a three-peat in the modern era. Real Madrid won three consecutive titles from the 2015–2016 through 2017–2018 seasons. Achieving this objective would allow PSG to match a legendary feat eight years in the making and follow directly in Real Madrid's footsteps.

Entering its third season pursuing the history forged by Real Madrid, PSG experienced roster attrition with the departures of Lee Kang-in and Gonçalo Ramos to Atlético Madrid and AC Milan, respectively. However, the club retained its core starting lineup alongside key rotation players. This continuity reinforces why PSG remains favored to reign over Europe once again.
