The heatwave is emerging as a variable in motorboat racing as well.
Since races take place on water, water surface conditions have a significant impact on how a race unfolds, changing moment to moment depending on temperature, wind, and rainfall. Racers naturally grow tense during stretches of extreme heat like the current one.
Motors are similarly affected by water conditions, temperature, humidity, and wind. While racers are randomly assigned motors of equal performance, they adjust their setup and approach based on the day's water conditions and weather. Since racing motors use water-cooled engines, managing engine heat becomes especially important in high temperatures. During official training after check-in, racers carefully test their motor's response and fine-tune fuel supply and other settings to find what works best for them. The racing authority overseeing cycling and motorboat racing also works to maintain stable motor performance, including adjusting cooling systems according to the season.
Wind is another key factor that can change the flow of a race, as wind direction and speed can affect how boats move during the straight run after the start and as they enter the first turn.
Experts advise that tracking water conditions, wind direction, and temperature changes can improve the accuracy of race predictions. The official motorboat racing website provides weather data for each race — including temperature, wind direction, wind speed, humidity, water temperature, and water level — and reviewing this closely offers a fuller picture of how racers make decisions and manage their races.
Lee Seo-beom, a race analyst at motorboat racing forecast publication "Gyeongjeong Korea," explained that while weather isn't an absolute determinant of who wins, motorboat racing is a sport where a racer's skill, motor performance, and water conditions all interact organically — so looking at temperature, wind, and water conditions together helps fans understand how racers respond to a changing environment, making the sport even more interesting to follow.
