U.S. President Donald Trump held his first telephone conversation with newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham shortly after the latter took office, discussing ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, Fox News reported on July 20 (local time).

Speaking to reporters immediately following the call, President Trump remarked that they had "a very good conversation," adding that he wished the new Prime Minister "good luck and Godspeed."

President Trump further explained that they touched upon a range of issues—including the traditional alliance between the two nations, North Sea oil field development, trade agreements, military cooperation, and mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that he pledged active U.S. support for the state affairs and challenges facing the incoming Prime Minister.

10 Downing Street also confirmed the phone call in an official statement, expressing anticipation for a meeting in Manchester during President Trump's upcoming visit to the United Kingdom.

Regarding the Middle East situation, the Prime Minister's Office conveyed its intention to contribute to securing safe navigation for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz to stabilize global supply chains and ease the burden on businesses and households. It emphasized that defense and security cooperation with allies remains a top priority.

The two leaders have previously traded criticism. Prior to Burnham's appointment as Prime Minister, President Trump criticized him as "extremely liberal," while Burnham had also publicly voiced criticism of the U.S. President.
