LG Energy Solution has surpassed 100,000 global patent applications. Among global battery companies, LG Energy Solution is the first to exceed 100,000 patent applications.

LG Energy Solution announced on the 21st that as of last month, its registered patents reached approximately 59,000, and its patent applications surpassed 100,000.

Viewing patents as core strategic assets, LG Energy Solution has consistently invested in research and development. In 2023, the company's annual R&D investment exceeded 1 trillion won for the first time, and last year, it poured in a record high of 1.3277 trillion won.

In particular, the company has accumulated proprietary technologies for more than 30 years across all sectors of batteries, including materials, electrodes, cells, packs, battery management systems (BMS), and manufacturing processes. Representative patents include Safety Reinforced Separators (SRS), Double Layer Coating (DLD), and Carbon Nanotube (CNT) pre-dispersion technology. It has also secured patent competitiveness in core material fields such as high-voltage electrolytes, high-nickel cathodes, and silicon anodes.

Recently, the company has been accelerating the acquisition of next-generation battery technologies as well. Most notably, it has preemptively established a patent foundation in prismatic LMR (Lithium-Manganese-Rich) batteries and dry electrodes. In the dry electrode sector specifically, it is strengthening its competitiveness in next-generation manufacturing processes by securing around 450 patents.

LG Energy Solution has built a patent portfolio possessing both quantity and quality through its 'IP R&D Process,' which runs patent acquisition concurrently with the early stages of technology development. The company plans to actively respond to patent infringements while contributing to the advancement of the industry ecosystem through reasonable licensing and technical exchanges.

Lee Han-sun, Head of the Intellectual Property Group and Senior Vice President, said, "The 100,000 patents are not just a simple number, but the fruit of ceaseless research, development, and challenges," adding, "Moving forward, we will continue to accelerate future growth based on proprietary technologies and premium patents, and establish a virtuous cycle where fair compensation for technological innovation leads to new innovations."
