Hyundai Kefico is accelerating development and commercialization of next-generation electric vehicle charging technologies focused on security, faster charging access and bidirectional energy systems.

The company said on May 22 that it has been working with Hyundai Motor Company from the early stages of vehicle development to integrate advanced charging technologies into future EV platforms.

One of Hyundai Kefico’s key developments is technology designed to significantly reduce charging initiation time and improve the user charging experience.

Conventional charging systems typically require an average of 25 to 50 seconds for authentication and communication between the vehicle and charger after the connector is plugged in. Hyundai Kefico said it optimized the authentication and communication structure between vehicles and charging stations, reducing the waiting time before charging begins to just a few seconds.

The company has also introduced Plug and Charge (PnC) technology using a PKI-based public key encryption authentication system.

PnC technology allows drivers to begin charging immediately after connecting the vehicle to a charger without requiring separate membership authentication, card tagging or mobile application access.

Hyundai Kefico said it also strengthened security reliability by applying Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and Hardware Security Module (HSM)-based systems to securely manage digital certificates. The company added that it became the only domestic company to obtain EV-Q quality certification.

In addition, Hyundai Kefico is reviewing broader applications for V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology, viewing EV chargers not simply as power supply devices but as key components of future energy infrastructure.

A Hyundai Kefico official said the company is strengthening integrated charging technology competitiveness encompassing vehicles, chargers and power grids, centered on security, charging speed and bidirectional power technologies.

“We will continue leading the pre-development and commercialization of next-generation charging technologies,” the official said.
