42dot, Hyundai Motor Group’s global software center, is accelerating its competitiveness in Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) by unveiling "Gleo AI," an in-car vocal AI agent capable of natural, human-like conversation.
42dot announced on May 21 that it has completed development of Gleo AI, a Large Language Model (LLM)-based in-car AI agent. The technology, debuted in Hyundai's "The New Grandeur," allows passengers to engage in natural dialogue while directly controlling various vehicle functions.
While conventional in-car voice assistants rely heavily on predefined commands, Gleo AI understands the user’s intent by comprehensively analyzing the conversational context, driving conditions, and the speaker’s seating position. It then coordinates the appropriate AI agents to execute functions and generate natural responses.
This enables drivers to handle navigation destinations, climate control, media playback, and vehicle settings solely through voice commands. The system can even execute different functions based on the current vehicle status and specific seat locations.
42dot explained that it has achieved both performance and flexibility by adopting a structural design that applies various LLMs in stages. It also implemented a hybrid AI architecture that processes low-latency, safety-critical vehicle controls on-device, while utilizing the cloud for high-performance computing tasks.
Voice technologies tailored specifically for the automotive environment were also developed in-house. By leveraging advanced LLM-based Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology, audio pre-processing, and multilingual speech recognition, the company has delivered natural conversation quality and rapid response speeds even while driving.
Considerable effort was dedicated to ensuring safety and reliability. 42dot integrated its proprietary "guardrail agent" to proactively block hazardous remarks or inappropriate requests, designing the vehicle control features to execute only after safety conditions are fully verified.
Industry observers view in-car AI agents as a pivotal element that will dictate future competitiveness in the SDV market, as they bridge simple infotainment with direct vehicle control and hyper-personalized services. This aligns with the Hyundai Motor Group's recent acceleration toward consolidating its autonomous driving, AI, and SDV divisions under the leadership of 42dot CEO Song Chang-hyeon.
Moving forward, 42dot plans to continuously upgrade Gleo AI through Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates. The company intends to increase the share of its proprietary LLM, reinforce its on-device AI capabilities, and advance its personalized recommendation services.
"Gleo AI is not just a voice assistant; it is a mobility companion that alleviates the driver's effort," said Song Chang-hyeon, CEO of 42dot. "Over the medium to long term, we will evolve it into a personalized AI that understands user behavior and preferences, assisting them with what they need even before they ask."
