Samsung Electronics has unveiled its first AI-powered smart glasses developed in collaboration with Google, signaling a major push into the next-generation wearable device market widely viewed as a successor to smartphones.

Samsung introduced two Android XR-based AI glasses models during Google I/O 2026 held on May 19 in Mountain View, California. It marked the first time the companies revealed actual product designs since announcing partnerships with global eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker in December last year.

According to Samsung and Google, the devices combine Samsung’s advanced hardware capabilities with Google’s personalized AI services while incorporating stylish eyewear designs from partner brands to create glasses suitable for everyday wear.

Samsung described the AI glasses as “companion” devices supporting core Galaxy AI smartphone functions, allowing users to access AI services without taking out their phones.

Although the glasses do not include a display, they feature built-in speakers, cameras and microphones capable of understanding user contexts in real time. Users can activate Google’s Gemini AI assistant entirely through voice commands to receive navigation guidance, restaurant recommendations and even place drink orders without looking at a smartphone screen.

The devices also support real-time voice translation that reflects speakers’ tones and can translate visible text such as menus and signboards. Incoming smartphone messages can be summarized automatically, while calendar schedules can be added through voice interaction alone. Users can also instantly capture photos of what they are seeing through the built-in camera.

The AI glasses market is expected to grow rapidly. Market research firm Smart Analytics Global projected the global AI glasses market would expand from $1.2 billion last year to $5.6 billion this year, more than quadrupling within a year. Annual shipments are forecast to reach 75 million units by 2030.

According to Counterpoint Research, Meta accounted for more than 80% of the AI glasses market in the second half of last year, while Apple is also accelerating development efforts in the sector.

Samsung, considered a late entrant in the market, is expected to launch its new AI glasses later this year. Industry observers believe the company may officially unveil the products during its Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for July in London.

Kim Jeong-hyun, vice president of Samsung Electronics’ MX Division, said, “These AI glasses represent an important milestone in expanding Samsung’s AI vision,” adding, “Based on Samsung’s mobile leadership and collaboration with partners, we will focus on delivering more meaningful user experiences by expanding the Galaxy ecosystem.”
