Doosan Group is close to finalizing the acquisition of SK Siltron, the world’s third-largest semiconductor wafer manufacturer, in a deal expected to accelerate the group’s transformation into a semiconductor-focused business.
According to industry and investment banking sources on May 18, Doosan is preparing to sign a stock purchase agreement for a combined 70.6% stake in SK Siltron, including a 51% stake held by SK Group and an additional 19.6% tied to total return swap (TRS) contracts.
Doosan had already been selected as the preferred bidder for SK Siltron in December last year.
The group is also expected to separately acquire the remaining 29.4% stake personally owned by Chey Tae-won later this year, effectively securing full ownership of the company. Market estimates value the entire acquisition at around 5 trillion won.
Industry observers say the acquisition reflects Doosan’s broader strategy to expand its semiconductor materials value chain.
SK Siltron is South Korea’s only producer of silicon wafers for semiconductors. Wafers are considered a critical material in the front-end semiconductor manufacturing process. Demand for advanced wafers is expected to grow structurally alongside rising demand for artificial intelligence semiconductors and high-bandwidth memory (HBM).
Doosan has been steadily expanding its semiconductor presence in recent years.
In 2022, the group entered the semiconductor sector in earnest by acquiring domestic semiconductor testing company Tesna, now known as Doosan Tesna. It later strengthened its back-end semiconductor capabilities by merging with semiconductor packaging company Enjion.
Recently, Doosan Tesna has been expanding semiconductor testing infrastructure centered on AI and advanced chip demand.
Once the SK Siltron acquisition is completed, Doosan is expected to establish a semiconductor business portfolio spanning both front-end and back-end processes — from wafer production to testing and packaging. The portfolio will also include copper clad laminate (CCL) operations under Doosan Corporation’s Electronics BG division, as well as robotics and automation solutions tied to semiconductor manufacturing.
Since 2020, Doosan Group has focused on developing three core growth pillars: smart machines, including Doosan Bobcat and Doosan Robotics; clean energy, including Doosan Enerbility and Doosan Fuel Cell; and advanced materials.
The SK Siltron deal is expected to significantly increase the group’s semiconductor business exposure and strengthen its position across the semiconductor supply chain.
