U.S. President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed support for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and pledged not to provide military equipment to Iran during talks held in Beijing.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday, Trump said Xi supported efforts to reach a settlement related to ongoing tensions involving Iran.
“President Xi wants a deal to happen,” Trump said. “He wants to see an agreement reached.”
Trump added that Xi also wanted the Strait of Hormuz to remain open and had offered assistance if needed.
“He said, ‘If I can help in any way, I’d like to help,’” Trump said. “He strongly stated that he would not provide military equipment to Iran.”
The comments were included in a preview clip released by Fox News, meaning the broader context of the remarks was expected to become clearer after the full interview aired later in the evening.
Trump has recently faced difficulties securing Iran’s cooperation on ceasefire-related negotiations and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, increasing the importance of support from major global powers such as China.
The U.S. president also said the summit with Xi produced progress in trade negotiations in addition to discussions about Middle East conflicts.
According to Trump, Xi pledged that China would purchase U.S. soybeans, crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and 200 Boeing 737 passenger aircraft as part of broader economic cooperation discussions.
