Daewoo Engineering & Construction said CEO Kim Bo-hyun visited Austria and the Czech Republic from May 11 to 14 to strengthen cooperation on the Dukovany nuclear power plant project and expand engagement with local communities.
During the trip, Kim visited Vienna on May 12 and met with senior officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency to discuss global nuclear energy market trends, developments in small modular reactors (SMRs) and the key concerns of countries seeking to introduce new nuclear power plants.
Daewoo E&C said it plans to leverage the construction and project management capabilities it has accumulated through participation in the Czech nuclear power project to pursue broader opportunities in the global nuclear energy market.
On May 13, Kim visited Náměšť nad Oslavou, a municipality near the planned Dukovany nuclear power plant site, to attend a fire truck donation ceremony. He later traveled to Prague to meet with officials from the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, including senior nuclear energy officials, to discuss cooperation related to the project.
The ceremony was held in a square near the town’s historic bridge and attended by Czech officials including Mayor Jan Kotáčka, as well as Korean representatives led by Kim.
According to Daewoo E&C, the donation was initiated after the consortium preparing for the Dukovany nuclear power project recognized the need to strengthen local firefighting infrastructure through engagement with residents and consultations with local governments. The initiative was officially approved in September 2024.
The fire truck was specially manufactured over approximately 14 months by Czech fire and specialty vehicle producer THT Polička, incorporating detailed operational requests from volunteer firefighters in Náměšť nad Oslavou and reflecting local operating conditions.
The vehicle is expected to be deployed immediately following the ceremony to support public safety and protect key strategic infrastructure in the region.
Kim said the donation reflected the company’s commitment to growing together with local communities and contributing to residents’ safety and quality of life.
“We will not only successfully carry out the Czech nuclear power project but also build a sustainable partnership based on trust with the local community,” he said.
Vítězslav Jonáš, head of the ET Association representing regional municipalities, praised the close cooperation between global industrial leaders and communities near nuclear facilities in a congratulatory speech.
Mayor Jan Kotáčka also expressed appreciation, calling the day “historic” for the town and its firefighters.
“Thanks to this state-of-the-art equipment, our ability to respond to crises has improved significantly,” he said. “We sincerely appreciate the support from Daewoo E&C and Doosan Enerbility for their interest in the safety and development of the region.”
