Hanwha Aerospace is joining forces with European unmanned systems specialist Milrem Robotics to pursue Romania’s unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) program as demand for next-generation unmanned military systems grows across Europe and NATO member states.
Hanwha Aerospace announced Thursday that it signed a teaming agreement with Milrem Robotics and Hanwha Aerospace Romania (HARO) during the BSDA 2026 international defense exhibition held in Bucharest on May 14.
Romania is currently pushing to introduce next-generation UGV platforms amid increasing interest among European countries and NATO members in multipurpose unmanned systems for future battlefield operations.
Hanwha Aerospace currently operates proprietary wheeled UGV platforms including the Arion-SMET and Grunt. Milrem Robotics’ tracked UGV platform, THEMIS, has gained recognition in global markets for its off-road mobility, hybrid propulsion system and ability to integrate a wide range of mission equipment under real combat conditions.
The two companies are also jointly developing a larger tracked UGV platform beyond their existing systems.
Ahead of the agreement, Hanwha Aerospace successfully conducted demonstrations of manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) combat systems in Romania using the Grunt and THEMIS platforms, drawing strong interest from Romanian military officials.
Hanwha Aerospace said it plans to establish local production and supply systems for next-generation unmanned solutions in Romania while expanding its unmanned systems business further into the broader European market.
Lim Kyung-wook, head of Hanwha Aerospace Romania, said the partnership would help deliver solutions optimized for Romania’s operational environment while also strengthening the company’s unmanned systems portfolio across Europe and NATO markets.
