Samsung Electronics said Wednesday it has become the first South Korean company to sign the European Union’s voluntary Code of Conduct (CoC) for smart appliances, strengthening its foundation for broader energy partnerships across Europe.
The EU CoC program, led by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), encourages appliance manufacturers to develop and expand high-efficiency smart home appliances.
The initiative specifically aims to improve coordination between smart appliances and electricity management systems so that energy demand can be distributed more efficiently during peak consumption periods.
Samsung said the signing will help expand collaboration opportunities with electricity providers throughout Europe, as the EU encourages utilities to work with appliance manufacturers participating in the CoC framework on energy-saving initiatives.
The company already operates partnerships with major European energy firms including British Gas in the United Kingdom and Coolblue in the Netherlands, offering customers electricity cost-saving benefits through connected appliances.
Samsung said it plans to further broaden those partnerships going forward.
The company’s all-in-one washer-dryer units, washing machines and dishwashers have also been registered as “energy smart appliances” under the EU’s European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL), after meeting CoC standards.
The EU uses EPREL to publicly disclose information on high-efficiency appliances. Since March, the platform has separately identified products capable of optimizing electricity usage through integration with power grids under the “energy smart appliance” category.
Samsung said it plans to expand its EPREL-certified lineup to include products such as EHS heat pumps and air conditioners.
“This signing demonstrates Samsung Electronics’ technological competitiveness in high-efficiency solutions and its efforts to expand the energy-saving ecosystem,” said Yang Hye-soon, vice president of Samsung’s Digital Appliances division.
“Based on this, we will continue expanding energy cooperation with various electricity companies across Europe,” she added.
