Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has successfully launched the Next-Generation Mid-sized Satellite 2, marking a major shift toward private-led space development in South Korea.

KAI announced that the satellite was launched on May 3 at 4 p.m. (KST) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California aboard a Falcon 9 rocket operated by SpaceX. About one hour and 15 minutes after liftoff, the satellite successfully communicated with a ground station in Svalbard, confirming normal operation of its main body and key systems.

This satellite is the first independently developed by a private company in South Korea based on transferred technologies, using a standardized 500kg-class platform. KAI has accumulated core technologies since 2015 through a joint design team with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, enabling it to internalize full system integration capabilities.

Equipped with a high-resolution Earth observation camera, the satellite is expected to be used in public sectors such as land management and disaster response. It will be operated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for the next four years.

The launch is seen as a significant milestone in South Korea’s transition from government-led to private-driven space development, aligning with the global “NewSpace” trend. It also demonstrates the country’s ability to develop both satellite platforms and key payloads domestically while reducing development costs and timelines through platform standardization.

KAI has built end-to-end infrastructure covering satellite development and production. Following the establishment of its space center in 2020, the company expanded its testing capabilities in 2025 by installing a 4-ton-class thermal vacuum chamber, enabling it to handle satellites ranging from small to large sizes.

“The launch of the Next-Generation Mid-sized Satellite 2 is a key milestone proving KAI’s space capabilities,” said Kim Jong-chul, CEO of KAI. “We will further develop the mid-sized satellite platform into an exportable product, accelerate our entry into the global space market, and contribute to strengthening Korea’s space economy.”

KAI plans to expand satellite mass production and exports, while also promoting package-type export models that combine aircraft and satellites to broaden the scope of Korea’s defense and aerospace industry.
