Hyundai Glovis aims to transport 5 million vehicles annually by sea, strengthening its position in the global automotive logistics market.

The company announced on April 29 that it will deploy the ultra-large pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) Glovis Leader, capable of transporting up to 10,800 vehicles, into finished vehicle shipping operations.

The vessel measures 230 meters in length, 40 meters in width, and weighs 102,590 tons. It features 14 cargo decks, with a total loading space equivalent to approximately 28 soccer fields.

Equipped with an LNG dual-fuel propulsion engine and shore power supply capability (AMP), the ship is expected to comply with tightening environmental regulations, including the European Union’s emissions trading system. By using shore power while docked, the vessel can significantly reduce emissions such as sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and fine particulate matter.

Including this addition, Hyundai Glovis plans to expand its PCTC fleet to 128 vessels by 2030. Based on this large-scale fleet, the company aims to increase its annual vehicle shipping volume from 3.4 million units to 5 million units by 2030—equivalent to about 20% of global seaborne vehicle transport demand.

To achieve this goal, the company is actively securing cargo volumes from both affiliated and non-affiliated clients. Last year, it signed shipping contracts with multiple automakers in Europe, North America, and China. Rising exports of Chinese vehicles have also contributed to higher fleet utilization.

Industry observers expect Hyundai Glovis’s continued fleet expansion to help ease the global shortage of PCTC capacity, which has been exacerbated by surging vehicle exports from the Far East and prolonged shipping times due to geopolitical risks in the Middle East and Red Sea regions.
