Hyundai Rotem has signed a deal to advance local production of its K2 main battle tank in Poland, marking a key step in expanding its global defense footprint.

The company announced on April 28 that it held a signing ceremony in Warsaw with Bumar-Labedy, a subsidiary of Poland’s state-owned defense group PGZ, to cooperate on local production and maintenance of the Polish variant K2PL and related recovery vehicles.

The K2PL tank will be modified to meet Poland’s operational requirements and will be produced locally alongside other Poland-specific variants based on the K2 platform.

A core element of the agreement is the localization strategy, which includes integrating Polish-made components — referred to as the “Polish solution” — into key systems.

These include front-and-rear cameras for enhanced situational awareness and inertial navigation systems that enable precise maneuvering and targeting.

The agreement also includes a training program that allows Bumar personnel to participate in maintenance operations conducted by Hyundai Rotem for the Polish military.

This initiative is designed to help local teams acquire technical expertise early and strengthen operational capabilities ahead of full-scale production.

Hyundai Rotem said the deal will serve as a foundation for long-term collaboration with Polish defense companies and accelerate the development of a localized production system.

The company aims to complete follow-up contracts smoothly and support Poland’s ambition to become a European production hub for K2 tanks.

“We have established a local production plan to support the first overseas manufacturing of the K2 tank,” a company official said. “We will contribute to Poland’s national security and industrial competitiveness while fostering a sustainable defense ecosystem at home.”
