Park Ji-won is stepping up efforts to expand overseas nuclear exports, actively engaging in “sales diplomacy” in Vietnam as part of a broader push by “Team Korea.”

According to Doosan Enerbility on April 23, Park and senior executives carried out a series of activities to strengthen cooperation for participation in Vietnam’s nuclear power projects.

Park joined the presidential business delegation accompanying Lee Jae-myung on his state visit to Vietnam. He attended key events such as the Korea–Vietnam business roundtable and business forum, where he met with government and energy industry officials to discuss nuclear cooperation.

“Cooperation between the public and private sectors, which has expanded for Vietnam’s new nuclear projects, will lead to meaningful results,” Park said. “We will do our best to ensure that ‘Team Korea,’ which has proven its competitiveness in the UAE and the Czech Republic, achieves success in Vietnam as well.”

“Team Korea” refers to a consortium of major public and private companies formed to export Korean nuclear power technology.

At the forum in Hanoi, Doosan Enerbility signed memorandums of understanding with local companies PTSC and PETROCONs to cooperate on nuclear power projects and develop supply chains. Both firms are subsidiaries of PetroVietnam (PVN), which is promoting the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power project in central Vietnam.

Industry observers say the agreements will help establish a local supply chain base in nuclear equipment and construction, creating a foothold for future project participation.

The Ninh Thuan project is Vietnam’s first commercial nuclear power initiative. Russia is in charge of the first plant, while “Team Korea” is seeking to win the second project using the Korean-designed APR1400 reactor.

To support this effort, Korea Electric Power Corporation signed an MOU with PVN last August to foster nuclear talent, and has recently expanded cooperation through supply chain seminars in Vietnam.

Park previously supported overseas nuclear bids as part of a presidential delegation to the Czech Republic in 2024, where he engaged with key stakeholders to help secure the Dukovany nuclear project.
