HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured its first overseas order for an icebreaking vessel, marking a breakthrough into the global special-purpose ship market.
The company announced it signed a contract worth $348.9 million (about 514.8 billion won) with the Swedish Maritime Administration to build one icebreaker, scheduled for delivery in 2029.
The deal is particularly significant as HD Hyundai outcompeted established icebreaker builders in Finland and Norway—countries traditionally dominant in the sector.
The win reflects strong evaluations of the company’s price competitiveness, delivery capability, and overall design and construction technology.
The vessel will operate in Sweden’s Baltic Sea, performing missions such as icebreaking support, fleet assistance, towing, and ice management.
Icebreakers are specialized ships designed to cut through thick sea ice, requiring reinforced hull structures, powerful propulsion systems, and unique hull designs.
The ordered vessel will measure 126 meters in length with a displacement of 15,000 tons. It will feature a Polar Class 4 (PC4) rating—capable of continuously breaking ice approximately 1 to 1.2 meters thick—and will be equipped with an electric propulsion system.
Global competition over polar shipping routes is intensifying. The United States has expanded its icebreaker-related budget to around $9 billion and, together with Canada and Finland, formed the ICE Pact to strengthen Arctic capabilities.
The pact aims to build 70 to 90 icebreakers over the next decade, reflecting growing strategic interest in Arctic navigation.
HD Hyundai plans to leverage this contract to expand into naval vessels and other ice-capable special-purpose ships.
A company official said the deal demonstrates global recognition of its strengthened capabilities following integration with affiliates, adding,
“We aim to expand into new export markets in the special-purpose vessel sector based on our technology and integrated business capabilities.”
