The Blue House on April 7 dismissed as “groundless” claims that President Lee Jae-myung avoided directly answering a question about ruling out seeking another term before constitutional reform discussions.
In an official statement, the presidential office said reports suggesting Lee sidestepped the question were “entirely untrue.”
According to the Blue House, Lee responded by explaining that it would be impossible to revise and pass the currently announced constitutional amendment proposal. He also noted that such changes would be unfeasible given that the opposition holds enough seats to block constitutional revisions.
Earlier in the day, Choi Bo-yoon, senior spokesperson for the People Power Party, said during a briefing that party leader Jang Dong-hyuk had asked Lee to declare in advance that he would not pursue consecutive or extended terms before discussing constitutional reform.
Choi added that Lee did not provide a response to the request.
The remarks came after a tripartite meeting on the people’s economy involving the government and leaders of both ruling and opposition parties.
