Jung Cheong-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, on April 6 strongly criticized prosecutors over the alleged manipulation of indictments related to the Ssangbangwool remittance case.

Speaking at a party leadership meeting in Suwon, Jung said, “The truth behind the outrageous Ssangbangwool remittance case is being revealed. This was not only an act that ruined the life of former Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young, but also state violence that destroyed judicial justice in South Korea.”

He referred to findings from a parliamentary investigation, claiming that key facts had been omitted or misrepresented during the prosecution process.

Jung said statements from the intelligence chief confirmed that a figure known as “Rio Nam” had not traveled to the Philippines, contradicting earlier claims. He also alleged that reports excluded information favorable to then-Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung and former Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young regarding a smart farm project.

“Upon hearing this, my blood boiled,” Jung said. “All the lies of the prosecution have been exposed. How could this happen?”

He added that those responsible would face legal accountability through a special counsel investigation, stating, “Criminal acts uncovered through this parliamentary probe must be addressed through a special prosecutor.”

Jung also elaborated on the Democratic Party’s slogan for the upcoming June 3 local elections, “Restoring the nation and building a competent local government.”

He said the slogan reflects the party’s determination to rebuild the country after what it described as damage under the previous administration and to restore national normalcy.
