South Korea’s presidential office on April 2 denied reports that the government is considering paying transit fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

An official said the claim was “groundless and has never been considered,” adding that the issue was not discussed at the previous day’s emergency economic review meeting.

Some local media outlets had reported, citing unnamed officials, that the government was reviewing a plan to pay transit costs in response to Iran’s demands, and that the matter had been discussed during a meeting chaired by President Lee Jae-myung.

The presidential office firmly rejected the reports, stating they were not true.
