Wonpil of DAY6 is making a solo return with his first mini album in four years, Unfiltered, offering a candid look into emotions he had long kept hidden.

Released on March 30, the album marks a departure from the band’s signature warm and uplifting sound, instead focusing on raw and unpolished feelings that had not been expressed on stage.

In a recent interview held in Seoul’s Gangnam District, Wonpil said, “I wanted to present myself as I am right now,” adding, “Rather than a refined version, I wanted to capture my emotions as they truly are.”

Reflecting on his decade-long career with DAY6, he shared that he had 고민 about whether continuing with the band’s established image of “youthful and comforting music” was the right path, saying he constantly thought about where he stands between maintaining that identity and exploring new directions.

Wonpil explained that he intentionally broke away from songwriting patterns he had developed over the years. “Some people described it as a darker transformation, but rather than that, I wanted to release the emotions that had built up inside me,” he said.

He added that filming the concept visuals and music video helped him fully immerse in those emotions, and afterward, he felt a sense of relief. “I always wanted to show only my good side. Even when things were difficult, I tried not to show it,” he said. “Instead of expressing it in words, I wanted to convey it through music. I thought these songs might speak for someone else’s feelings as well.”

Wonpil participated in writing and composing all tracks on the album. The title track, “Love Ward,” best reflects the album’s concept and was both the first song he started working on and the one he spent the most time refining.

“I wanted there to be a place where people could freely shout and say, ‘I’m struggling,’” he said, explaining the inspiration behind the track.

Describing the album as a moment of reflection, Wonpil said, “It was a time to truly look back on the past 10 years.” He added that he approached the project with the mindset that it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment, working without regrets alongside his bandmates and staff.
