Former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum will officially announce his candidacy for Daegu mayor on March 30 at February 28 Memorial Central Park, a site symbolizing South Korea’s first pro-democracy movement.

According to political sources and the Democratic Party on March 29, Kim will first outline his position at a press briefing at the National Assembly in Seoul at 10 a.m., before traveling to Daegu to deliver his official campaign declaration to citizens at 3 p.m.

The choice of venue is seen as a deliberate move to emphasize a message of change. The park commemorates the February 28 Democratic Movement, widely regarded as the country’s first democratic uprising.

Other potential locations, including the Democratic Party’s Daegu headquarters, Dongseong-ro, and Suseong Alpha City, had been considered. However, the final decision reflected Kim’s intention to highlight the spirit of democratic reform associated with the historic site.

The Democratic Party said Kim had previously designated the February 28 Movement as a national commemorative day during his tenure as interior minister, underscoring his longstanding connection to the movement.

Party officials added that the campaign message would center on “moving forward together on a path of change,” appealing to civic pride and the reformist spirit of Daegu residents.

Kim’s bid is expected to draw attention as the Democratic Party seeks to expand its presence in the traditionally conservative stronghold of Daegu.
