The Democratic Party of Korea on March 27 pledged to accelerate legislation granting Sejong City legal status as the nation’s administrative capital, describing the city as a symbol of balanced national development.

Speaking at an on-site party leadership meeting in Sejong, party leader Jung Chung-rae said, “Sejong is the center of the nation and a symbol of balanced development. It is also a city that embodies former President Roh Moo-hyun’s vision of moving beyond a centralized system.”

“We will speed up the passage of a special law so that Sejong can have legal status as the administrative capital,” he added.

Party officials also emphasized plans to complete key infrastructure, including the construction of a Sejong branch of the National Assembly and a presidential office.

Supreme Council member Hwang Myung-sun said establishing Sejong as the administrative capital is a core task of the government’s balanced development strategy, adding that the party would take the lead in solidifying the city’s administrative role.

The party also marked the West Sea Defense Day by honoring fallen service members and pledging to strengthen national defense capabilities. Jung stated that the government would ensure proper recognition and compensation for those who have sacrificed for the country, in line with President Lee Jae-myung’s governing philosophy.

Meanwhile, the party stressed unity ahead of the upcoming June 3 local elections, calling for a fair nomination process and a culture of acceptance among candidates to enhance competitiveness.
