The Democratic Party of Korea has publicly urged former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum to run in the upcoming Daegu mayoral election, calling him a “winning card” for the race.
As speculation grows that only Kim’s final decision remains, expectations are rising within the party that he may lean toward entering the race following repeated requests.
On March 23, Democratic Party leader Jung Cheong-rae formally called on Kim to run during a field Supreme Council meeting held in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province.
“As party leader, I respectfully ask you to run as the Democratic Party’s candidate for Daegu mayor,” Jung said.
He emphasized that local residents are increasingly calling for a leader with extensive government experience and a deep understanding of regional issues. “Only Kim Boo-kyum is the sure winning card who can lead the development of underdeveloped Daegu,” he said.
Jung highlighted Kim’s experience as interior minister and prime minister, as well as his time serving as a lawmaker in Daegu. He noted that Kim has long worked to overcome regionalism and promote balanced development, describing him as a figure essential for the city’s future.
According to the Democratic Party, Kim recently indicated that he would soon announce his position on whether to run for Daegu mayor. The party has repeatedly urged him to enter the race, but he has yet to give a clear answer as he continues to deliberate.
A local party official said, “It appears Kim will reveal his stance soon.”
Jung added that the party has made multiple earnest requests for Kim to contribute to regional development and that internal discussions on nomination procedures are also underway.
