Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea, expressed hope that the country would move beyond crisis and achieve a new leap forward this year in a Seollal holiday message on Feb. 16.
In a Facebook post, Woo said, “We need a democracy that goes beyond democracy,” adding that only when democratic values are proven through improvements in people’s daily lives can South Korea move toward a better future.
He stressed that politics must work harder to restore public trust and ease economic hardships facing citizens. “Recalling the original commitment we made at the opening of the 22nd National Assembly — to build a National Assembly that protects the people and advances toward the future — we will faithfully fulfill our responsibilities and roles in the new year as well,” he said.
Woo also extended holiday greetings, wishing citizens a warm and abundant Lunar New Year with their families and relatives.
In addition, he expressed gratitude to workers at industrial sites, members of the armed forces, and uniformed public officials such as police officers and firefighters who continue to carry out their duties during the holiday to safeguard public safety and daily life.
