South Korea’s National Security Office convened an emergency security situation meeting on Tuesday to discuss responses to North Korea’s latest missile launch, officials said.
The office said it reviewed details of the launch and assessed its potential impact on national security. It also inspected and directed necessary measures for maintaining readiness across relevant agencies.
“The ballistic missile launch by North Korea is a provocative act that violates United Nations Security Council resolutions, and we strongly urge an immediate halt,” the National Security Office said in a statement.
It added that the situation and South Korea’s response measures were reported to the president.
Officials from related agencies, including the Ministry of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, attended the meeting.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea at around 3:50 p.m. from areas north of Pyongyang. The launch came 23 days after the North’s hypersonic missile test on Jan. 4.
