Actress Moon Geun-young is set to return to the theater stage for the first time in nine years, starring in the play Orphans.
Production company Red & Blue announced Tuesday that Orphans will run from March 10 to May 31 at the TOM Theater in Daehangno, Seoul.
Written by American playwright Lyle Kessler, Orphans premiered in Los Angeles in 1983 and has since been staged worldwide for more than four decades, earning its reputation as a long-running classic. The play was first introduced to Korean audiences in 2017 and returns this year for its fourth season, following runs in 2019 and 2022.
Set in North Philadelphia, the story follows Harold, a middle-aged gangster who grew up as an orphan, and his unexpected cohabitation with two orphaned brothers. Through their uneasy relationship, the characters undergo profound change and emotional growth.
Moon will play Treat, an orphan who has devoted his life to protecting his younger brother, Phillip. In her first stage appearance since Romeo and Juliet in 2017, Moon will take on the male role in disguise, delivering a bold and intense performance. Actors Jung In-ji, Choi Seok-jin and Oh Seung-hoon are also cast as Treat.
The role of Harold will be portrayed by Park Ji-il, Woo Hyun-joo, Lee Seok-jun and Yang So-min, while Phillip will be played by Kim Si-yu, Kim Ju-yeon, Choi Jung-woo and Kim Dan-i.
Moon’s return is expected to draw strong attention from theatergoers, marking a significant moment in her career and in the upcoming Daehangno theater season.
