Despite a continued decline in overall movie theater attendance this year, revenue from premium technology auditoriums at multiplex cinemas has increased, industry data showed.

According to Megabox on December 11, premium formats such as MX4D and Dolby Cinema accounted for 14.4% of total box office revenue from January to November, nearly double the 7.7% share recorded during the same period last year.

The growth was attributed to the strong performance of films with high demand for premium viewing experiences, including F1: The Movie, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle, and Attack on Titan: The Final Chapter – The Last Attack. The trend was further supported by ongoing upgrades to theater facilities.

Released in June, F1: The Movie enjoyed sustained audience interest and was screened for 94 consecutive days in Dolby Cinema auditoriums. Meanwhile, Attack on Titan, a Megabox-exclusive release, saw 88% of viewers who chose premium formats opt for MX4D, according to the company.

A Megabox official said the effects of strengthening spatial competitiveness centered on premium auditoriums are expected to become more pronounced next year. The company also plans to expand customized in-theater experiences, including live performance screenings and virtual reality concerts.

Meanwhile, CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of CJ CGV, also reported strong growth. Revenue from its core businesses—4DX and SCREENX—rose 56% year on year in the third quarter, underscoring the growing role of premium formats in offsetting declining foot traffic at theaters.
