Maggie Kang, director of the Netflix animated film K-pop Demon Hunters, has been selected as a recipient of the Ok-gwan Culture Medal at this year’s Korea Content Awards.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency held the awards ceremony on Dec. 10 at COEX in Seoul, honoring 24 individuals for contributions to the content industry and recognizing 15 outstanding works.
This year, organizers expanded the scope of honors by adding a new category, “Contributions to Content Industry Development,” alongside the existing awards for overseas expansion, broadcasting and video, and gaming. Kang was recognized for her role in boosting the global influence of K-pop and related cultural content through the strong performance of K-pop Demon Hunters on Netflix.
In the broadcasting and video category, director Kim Won-seok of When Life Gives You Tangerines and writer Park Ji-eun of Queen of Tears received the Culture Medal. In the overseas expansion category, presidential citations went to Fan Entertainment CEO Park Young-seok and Studio Slam CEO Yoon Hyun-joon.
In the gaming category, SHIFT UP CEO Kim Hyung-tae and Nexon Korea Vice President Park Jung-moo were honored with presidential citations. Writer Mo Eun-seol of the Korea Broadcasting Writers Association received a commendation for contributions to broadcasting and video industry development.
Among this year’s outstanding works, 15 titles across comics, animation and character content were selected. Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint (comics), King of Kings (animation), and Dallnimi (character content) all received the Presidential Award.
Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young said the government would continue to provide comprehensive support to help Korea’s content industry expand globally.
