Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Sang-wook on Monday sharply criticized the People Power Party (PPP), accusing it of rejecting the core constitutional value of democracy and refusing to reflect on its actions.

Speaking on AsiaToday TV’s Shin Yul’s Fact Check, Kim said the PPP’s increasingly hardline rhetoric “is not the behavior of a conservative party,” arguing that true conservatism should prioritize safeguarding the Constitution, democracy and the basic framework of society.

He contended that the PPP is “actively fomenting hatred and division to manufacture political power,” calling the party’s conduct “a textbook example of the extreme far right.”

Kim also claimed that the PPP’s structural problems stem from its membership base, saying, “A significant portion of party members are influenced by the Unification Church, Shincheonji, or other radical Christian groups, preventing normal decision-making.”

Turning his criticism to PPP leader Jang Dong-hyuk, Kim said Jang is “inciting ultra-hardline supporters” in pursuit of “complete control of the party.” He argued that Jang is intensifying conflict with the Democratic Party, appealing to hardline supporters, and tightening disciplinary action against lawmakers aligned with former justice minister Han Dong-hoon to cement his grip on power.

On the upcoming warrant review for former PPP floor leader Choo Kyung-ho, Kim said that “strictly in terms of legal criteria, the likelihood of issuance is high.” However, he noted that courts have recently rejected several warrants, including those for former justice minister Park Sung-jae and the brother of Kim Keon-hee.

Kim expressed concern that “the judiciary appears to be considering factors beyond uncovering substantive truth,” adding that if judges were guided solely by law and professional conscience, the seriousness of the allegations, their credibility, and the risk of evidence destruction “have all been sufficiently demonstrated.”
