A woman has filed a police complaint accusing Democratic Party lawmaker Jang Kyung-tae of sexual assault, prompting the party leadership to order a fact-finding review while Jang strongly rejects the accusation as fabricated.
According to police on November 27, Yeongdeungpo Police Station received a complaint on November 25 alleging quasi-forced indecent assault. The case was transferred the following day to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, which is expected to begin by questioning the complainant and related witnesses.
The woman alleges that Jang assaulted her during a social gathering at an unspecified location in Seoul late last year. Investigators plan to interview those involved as the inquiry moves forward.
Jang denied the allegations outright in a Facebook post, writing, “I will take strong legal action, including for criminal defamation and false accusation, against this completely untrue smear attempt.”
Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae has ordered the party’s ethics inspection unit to conduct an internal fact-finding investigation into the matter.
