Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met briefly with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Canada, urging Washington to expedite the release of the bilateral “fact sheet” outlining recent agreements on tariffs and security.
According to the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, Cho attended the expanded session on maritime and energy security during the G7 foreign ministers’ gathering in Niagara on Nov. 12 (local time).
A photo released by the ministry showed the two standing and conversing informally, suggesting the interaction was not a formal bilateral meeting but an impromptu exchange.
A ministry official said the ministers discussed the fact sheet, and that Cho asked Rubio to make “special efforts” to ensure the commitments reached during the two recent summits between President Lee Jae-myung and President Donald Trump are translated into concrete, detailed documentation.
Rubio reportedly responded that he would “actively coordinate with relevant U.S. agencies so that the joint explanatory document can be released as quickly as possible.”
Seoul and Washington had originally planned to publish the fact sheet shortly after the Oct. 29 summit held during the APEC gathering in Gyeongju, but the release has been delayed for more than two weeks. The delay is understood to stem not from bilateral disagreements but from coordination among multiple U.S. government departments.
Cho did not hold a formal bilateral meeting with Rubio during the G7 events, but he met with foreign ministers from Canada and several other countries.
