President Lee Jae-myung has approved an extension of the investigation period for the special counsel team probing the December 3 martial law incident, granting the legally permitted final extension under the special counsel law.

The Presidential Office announced on November 7 that “President Lee approved the extension on the previous day (November 6) to ensure that the special counsel’s investigation contributes to settling the legacy of rebellion and achieving national unity.”

According to the office, the special counsel had formally requested the 30-day extension on November 5 under Article 10, Paragraph 4 of the Special Counsel Act, citing the need for a more thorough probe into the incident.

With the approval, the special counsel’s investigation—originally set to conclude on November 14—will now continue until December 14.

“The Lee administration will continue to make every effort to uphold the Constitution, protect democracy, and realize the sovereignty of the people,” the Presidential Office added.
